BELIEFS

At Redeemer Church we believe that:

  1. There is one everlasting, perfect God, who created the world and everything in it. He is all-present, all-powerful, all-knowing and unchanging.
  2. The Bible is inspired by God and completely trustworthy. It is sufficient for teaching us what to believe and how to live. The Holy Spirit (see below) helps us to understand the Bible.
  3. God is one God but also three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We call this wonderful mystery the Trinity.
  4. God made men and women perfect, but they turned away from God. We call this sin.
  5. Because of this, mankind is spiritually dead, born sinful and unable to turn back towards God without the power of the Holy Spirit.
  6. Jesus Christ is fully God. He is the second member of the Trinity. Yet He became fully human when He was born on earth 2,000 years ago, by a virgin named Mary.
  7. Jesus earned our way to heaven. He did this by living a perfect life and, in being put to death on a cross, becoming our substitute – God punished Jesus for our sin.
  8. On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead. Soon afterwards, He was taken up to heaven, where He is now ruling over everything and praying for his church (see below).
  9. Men and women can now receive Jesus’ perfection as a free gift, by belief in Him, which we call faith. This means although we sin, we can be completely forgiven and restored to the kind of relationship with God that God intended us to have from the beginning.
  10. After Jesus returned to heaven, the Holy Spirit, the third member of the Trinity, came to comfort, counsel, empower and lead believers.
  11. The Holy Spirit also challenges non-believers (non-Christians) about their sin and brings them to Jesus and works in believers to change them, making them more holy, and giving them gifts to help them serve and worship God.
  12. Jesus is building His new community, called the church. There is the universal church (all Christians across the world) and the local church – a group of believers in a particular area who are committed to Jesus and to each other.
  13. The local church should bring in the rule of God, which we call His Kingdom, wherever they are. God is worshipped and His word is preached. People are born again, the poor are cared for and the sick are healed. Believers are baptised in water as a sign of commitment and a symbol of their death and resurrection in Jesus Christ. The Lord’s Supper is also followed, to celebrate Jesus’ death and resurrection.
  14. We believe Jesus will one day return to earth and God’s Kingdom will come in fullness. All mankind will be judged, with believers in Jesus given everlasting joy with him.
